Hi all,
I'd like to hear how other DMOs handle requests for employment references, separate from employment verification.
To be clear, employment verification confirms dates of employment, title, and sometimes salary. That part we have covered. What I'm asking about is when a prospective employer calls and wants a reference, things like performance, rehire eligibility, strengths and weaknesses, or a manager's personal recommendation.
A few specific questions:
- Do you have a written policy on providing references, or is it handled case by case?
- If you do have one, does it prohibit references outright, route all requests through HR, or allow supervisors to give them personally?
- If supervisors can give references, do you require them to be given in a personal capacity rather than on behalf of the organization?
- Have you run into issues with LinkedIn recommendations or informal reference requests that came to staff directly?
If you're willing to share policy language, I'd be grateful and happy to share back what I compile.
Thanks,
